College Students, Pot Heads?

Recent research also suggests procrastination and patterns of use matter when looking at GPA.

Money Monday is back, and today Drodie has a question:

Can you be a straight-A student AND a cannabis consumer?

Back in the day, the stereotypical “college pot head” was easy to picture — oversized hoodie, backpack full of snacks, half-finished homework, and probably somebody asking, “Wait… what class are we supposed to be in?” 😂

But college students today are a different breed.

They've got AI, online classes, side hustles, internships, student loans, crypto, content creation, and enough caffeine to power a small city.

And yes…

THC is still somewhere in the conversation.

The old stereotype says cannabis users are automatically lazy, unmotivated, and academically checked out.

Reality?

It's a lot more complicated than that.

National Monitoring the Future data shows cannabis remains part of the lives of many young adults. In 2024, 41.4% of young adults reported cannabis use in the previous 12 months, while 29% reported use in the previous 30 days.

That doesn't mean 41.4% of college students are walking around campus baked with a joint behind their ear.

It means cannabis is a pretty normal part of the broader young-adult conversation.

And today's cannabis consumer might look very different from the old-school stereotype.

You've got:

📚 The honor-roll stoner
💻 The computer-science stoner
🏀 The athlete
🎨 The creative
💰 The side-hustler
🎧 The music major
🌱 The cannabis entrepreneur

Being a cannabis consumer doesn't automatically tell you someone's GPA, ambition, or future.

Here's where we gotta separate the stereotype from the science.

Research examining college students has found that the relationship between cannabis use and academic performance isn't simply “weed = bad grades.”

One 2025 study of college students examined procrastination as a factor connecting cannabis use and GPA. The researchers found that procrastination moderated the relationship between lifetime cannabis use and cumulative GPA, highlighting how other behaviors can matter when looking at academic performance.

Don't blame the herb for everything when your real problem might be waiting until 11:47 PM to start a paper that's due at midnight. 😂

Your study habits still matter.

Your sleep matters.

Your time management matters.

Your motivation matters.

And if cannabis use starts interfering with those things, that's when the conversation changes.

Let's be real.

College has always been about balancing responsibilities with freedom.

Today's students just have more choices — and more cannabis products to choose from.

Flower.

Vapes.

Edibles.

Drinks.

Concentrates.

And a whole universe of cannabis accessories.

But there's an important distinction:

Using cannabis doesn't automatically mean being irresponsible.

At the same time, being academically successful doesn't automatically mean cannabis can't create problems.

Heavy or frequent use can be associated with academic and cognitive concerns, and research on college students has identified cannabis-use patterns associated with poorer academic outcomes.

So the real question isn't:

“Are college students still pot heads?”

The better question is:

“Can students manage cannabis without letting it manage them?”

That's a much more interesting conversation.

If cannabis is part of your lifestyle, know your limits and know your responsibilities.

Handle your assignments.

Show up to class.

Protect your sleep.

Know your school's rules.

Know the laws where you live.

And don't let getting high become an excuse for not getting your money right.

Because being the “smart stoner” isn't about proving you can smoke and still pass.

The stereotype is changing.

But responsibility still matters.

Your stash shouldn't cost you your future.

And your future shouldn't mean you can't enjoy the culture either.

That's the balance.

That's the conversation.

That's the session.

You can have books in the backpack and a stash in the drawer.

Just make sure the books are getting opened, the assignments are getting done, and your future is still getting funded.

Because being a stoner doesn't have to mean being a bum.

Get your grades. Get your bag. Get your goals. Then roll something up when the work is handled. 🌿💰
